Fusha or Dialect? When a Modern Standard Arabic Voiceover Wins, and How to Make It Sound Natural
When a Modern Standard Arabic voiceover beats a dialect: news, documentaries, government notices and pan-Arab training, plus tashkeel tips and scripts.
In this article
Choose a Modern Standard Arabic voiceover when the message must cross borders, carry official weight or stay online for years: news bulletins, documentaries, government notices and training rolled out in several countries. Use plain, modern MSA rather than ornate written Arabic, and add tashkeel to ambiguous words and meaning-bearing endings, because in Fusha a wrong vowel can change the meaning.
01The short answer: borders, authority and shelf life
Arabic is diglossic. Everyone speaks a dialect at home, Saudi, Emirati, Egyptian, Levantine and so on, while Modern Standard Arabic (MSA, or Fusha) is the shared language of school, news, official documents and documentaries. So every Arabic voiceover project starts with the same decision, and three questions settle most of it.
- Will it cross borders? If listeners are in Riyadh, Cairo and Amman, MSA is the one register none of them hears as foreign.
- Does it need authority or neutrality? Official notices and news sound credible in MSA and casual in dialect.
- Will it live for years? A documentary or a compliance course is re-used long after a campaign ends, often in new markets.
If the honest answer to one of these is yes, start from MSA. This article focuses on those cases. Choosing a dialect for ads and for audiobooks are separate questions with their own guides:
02When a Modern Standard Arabic voiceover is the right call
These are the projects where localization managers and producers most often land on MSA, and why:
| Content | Why MSA wins | Delivery tip |
|---|---|---|
| News bulletins and summaries | Neutral, credible, mixed audience | Steady pace, short sentences |
| Documentaries | Long shelf life, sold across markets | Calm narration, longer pauses |
| Government and public notices | Addresses everyone with official weight | Numbers and dates first, style second |
| Corporate and safety training | Mandatory content that must mean one thing | Slightly slower, repeat key points |
| E-learning for several countries | One version for the Gulf, Egypt and Levant | Lock terminology from lesson one |
| Airport and venue announcements | Travellers from every Arab country | One fact per sentence, repeat numbers |
Formality alone is not the common thread. A nature documentary is not formal, but it has to sound right in five years and on a channel in another country without being re-recorded. A forklift safety module is not public, but every worker on the site has to understand each sentence the same way. MSA solves both.
Government announcements have their own wording, approval and accessibility rules, covered separately:
03Which MSA? Plain modern Fusha beats ornate Arabic
When an MSA voiceover sounds stiff, the voice is rarely the problem. The script is. Many Arabic scripts are written in the register of official letters: long sentences, chains of verbal nouns and throat-clearing openers. That reads fine on paper and tires the ear. Two versions of the same notice:
يسعدنا أن نحيطكم علمًا بأنه قد تقرّر، اعتبارًا من مطلع الشهر القادم، إيقاف العمل بالنماذج الورقية إيقافًا تامًّا، وذلك في إطار مساعي التحوّل الرقمي.We are pleased to inform you that it has been decided, effective the start of next month, to completely discontinue the use of paper forms, as part of digital transformation efforts.
من بداية الشهر القادم، نتوقف عن استخدام النماذج الورقية.
كل الطلبات ستكون عبر التطبيق.From next month, we are stopping paper forms. All requests will go through the app.
Same message, half the length, and it sounds like a person talking. This is broadcast MSA: grammatically correct, but built from common words, short sentences and verbs rather than abstract nouns. Practical rules for your writers:
- One idea per sentence: if you need a third “and”, split it.
- Verbs over verbal nouns: “we are stopping” is clearer than “the discontinuation of”.
- Cut the preamble: “we are pleased to inform you” costs three seconds and carries nothing.
- Everyday vocabulary: choose the word a teenager in any Arab capital would know.
Plain MSA is not cold. Here is a training line in plain Fusha next to the Saudi version. Both are clear, but only the first works unchanged for staff in Riyadh, Cairo and Amman:
إذا نسيتَ كلمة المرور، اضغط على «نسيت كلمة المرور» واتبع الخطوات.
إذا نسيت الباسوورد، اضغط «نسيت كلمة المرور» وكمّل الخطوات.
04Tashkeel: where an MSA voiceover is won or lost
Arabic is normally written without short vowels (tashkeel), and readers fill them in from context. In dialect a slightly off vowel passes as natural. In Fusha it does not: a wrong case ending can swap subject and object, and an unvowelled word can be read with a different meaning altogether. That is why tashkeel matters more in MSA than in any dialect.
| Problem | Example | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Word with several readings | مَلِك · مَلَك · مُلْك (king, angel, kingdom) | Vowel that word only |
| Meaning set by case endings | كرّمَ الوزيرُ الطلابَ (the minister honoured the students) | Vowel subject and object |
| Numbers and agreement | 15 مسافرًا (15 travellers) | Write it out: خمسةَ عشرَ مسافرًا |
| Names and acronyms | Agencies, officials, places | Add them to the pronunciation dictionary |
| Sentence endings | The last word before a full stop | Stopping on a sukoon sounds natural |
You do not need to vowel every letter; fully vowelled scripts are hard to proofread and invite new mistakes. Vowel three things: ambiguous words, endings that change the meaning, and numbers. And one newsroom habit worth copying: readers pause on a sukoon at the end of a sentence, so there is no need to force a full case ending before every full stop.
In Vocla these tools sit in the Text to speech editor. Auto-tashkeel vowels the script or a selection and highlights every change for you to accept or reject. The word inspector lists the possible readings of a word and plays each one in your chosen voice. The pronunciation dictionary stores agency names, people and acronyms for the whole workspace. Tashkeel marks are not counted as billable characters, so fixing pronunciation costs nothing extra.
In formal scripts write numbers as words and check number agreement: ثلاثة أيام (three days) but ثلاث سنوات (three years). Native listeners notice agreement errors in MSA immediately.

06When MSA loses, and the hybrid that works
MSA is not automatically the safe choice. In some formats it sounds distant or even comic:
- Social hooks: the first second has to sound like real speech, and Fusha slows the way in.
- Local everyday services: a neighbourhood clinic or restaurant sounds closer in the local dialect.
- Comedy and casual dialogue: a joke in Fusha usually turns into a joke about Fusha.
- Single-country audiences: if everyone is in one market, dialect wins warmth at almost no cost.
هل تبحث عن قهوة مختصة تصل إلى باب منزلك؟
تدوّر قهوة مختصة توصلك لين باب البيت؟
Both lines ask “Looking for specialty coffee delivered to your door?”, but only the Saudi one sounds like a friend talking. Between the extremes sits the hybrid documentary makers and L&D teams use: MSA narration with short dialect segments. The narrator speaks Fusha while interviewees speak their own dialects; a course is taught in MSA while each market version opens with a local-dialect welcome. Keep the switch deliberate and at clear boundaries, never inside a sentence.
If your audience is all Gulf but spread across several countries, there is a middle option between MSA and a single country dialect:
07Producing an MSA voiceover in Vocla
- 1Pick MSA in the dialect picker: it forces Fusha pronunciation instead of a local accent reading a Fusha script.
- 2Choose a voice in the Voice library: a calm mid-range voice for news and training, a deeper one for documentary narration.
- 3Simplify the script first: read it aloud and split any sentence that needs a second breath.
- 4Add tashkeel selectively: ambiguous words, meaning-bearing endings and numbers, then review each suggested change.
- 5Fill the pronunciation dictionary: agency, official and place names, so every file says them the same way.
- 6Test one paragraph: generate a short sample, adjust speed, then render the full script.

Key takeaways
- Use MSA when the message crosses borders, needs official weight or will stay online for years.
- Write plain modern Fusha with short sentences and common words; ornate MSA tires listeners.
- Vowel ambiguous words, meaning-bearing endings and numbers, and let sentences end on a sukoon.
- For documentaries and training, a deliberate hybrid works: MSA narration with short dialect segments.
Frequently asked questions
Is MSA or dialect better for an Arabic voiceover?
Neither is better everywhere. MSA wins for news, documentaries, government notices and training across several countries. Dialect wins for social content, local services and anything aimed at a single market.
Do all Arabic speakers understand Modern Standard Arabic?
MSA is the language of schooling and media across the Arab world, so a broad audience in the Gulf, Egypt, the Levant and North Africa understands it. Understanding is not the same as connection, though; some audiences respond more warmly to their own dialect.
Do I need to add tashkeel to the whole script?
No. Vowel words with more than one reading, endings that change the meaning, and numbers. Fully vowelled scripts are harder to proofread and rarely sound better.
Does tashkeel use extra credits in Vocla?
No. Diacritic marks are not counted as billable characters, so you can vowel ambiguous words to fix pronunciation at no extra cost.
Can I mix MSA and dialect in one video?
Yes, if the switch is deliberate: MSA narration with dialect interviews or a dialect welcome. Avoid switching inside a sentence, which sounds like a mistake rather than a style.
