Enhance Old Photos With AI: Sharper Family Prints and Blurry Shots at 2K or 4K
Enhance old photos with AI: sharpen family prints, scans and blurry shots to 2K or 4K, prep the original properly, and know what enhancement can't do.
In this article
To enhance old photos with AI in Vocla, open Images, choose the Enhance tab, upload the photo and pick 2K (400 credits) or 4K (700 credits). The studio redraws the same photo with sharper detail and keeps its shape, with no prompt needed. Because it redraws detail, faces can change slightly, so always keep the original.
01How to enhance old photos with AI in a few clicks
Every family has the album: a parent in their twenties, a wedding from the eighties, childhood shots on film that have faded over the years. Photograph one with your phone and send it to the family group and it comes out soft and small. Vocla's Enhance tool is built for exactly that: one photo in, the same photo out, sharper and at a higher resolution.
- 1Open Images: it's in the sidebar of the Vocla web app.
- 2Choose Enhance: from the tabs at the top of the composer, or press Enhance on any image already in the studio.
- 3Upload the photo: JPEG, PNG or WebP. No prompt needed.
- 4Pick the size: 2K for 400 credits, or 4K for 700 on plans with 4K.
- 5Compare and download: see the original and the result side by side, then download.
The result keeps the original shape: portrait stays portrait, square stays square, and nothing gets cropped.

The tool works with what you give it, so the cleaner the digital copy, the better the result. For a paper print:
- A scanner wins: if you have one, scan at the highest resolution it offers for even light and no glare.
- Phone in daylight: lay the print flat near a window and skip the flash, which leaves a shine on glossy paper.
- Shoot straight down: keep the phone parallel to the print so it doesn't come out skewed.
- Take it out of the frame: glass adds reflections and haze that aren't part of the photo.
- Crop the edges: remove the table and your fingers before uploading so the tool focuses on the photo.
- Don't compress it: upload the original file, not a copy sent over WhatsApp, which strips detail the tool needs.
Very small images may be refused with a request for a bigger one. If yours is tiny, re-photograph the print rather than uploading the small file.
Got a whole album? Don't start with everything. Pick the hardest photo, try it at 2K and check the faces. If you like the result, carry on. Keep two folders, originals and enhanced copies, and name each file by year and occasion, such as “1992 uncle wedding”, so the original is always there if you want to redo it later.
032K or 4K: which resolution to choose
| Size | Credits per image | Plans | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2K | 400 | Starter and up | Phones, social posts, family chats |
| 4K | 700 | Professional and up | Large prints, archiving, big screens |
2K is enough for most people; a photo viewed on a phone or sent to relatives doesn't need more. Choose 4K for a large framed print or the best possible archive copy.
How far do credits go? Starter's 5,000 monthly credits are roughly 12 photos at 2K if spent entirely on enhancement. Professional's 80,000 are roughly 114 photos at 4K. The same credits also pay for voice, video and other images, and a failed image is refunded in full.
04What AI enhancement can and can't do
Honesty matters here. The tool doesn't uncover hidden detail; it redraws the photo at a higher resolution and fills missing detail with its best guess. That's why results are sometimes stunning and sometimes need a careful look:
| It can | It can't |
|---|---|
| Sharpen edges and features and reduce noise | Bring back a face that isn't visible in the photo |
| Take a small photo up to 2K or 4K | Guarantee features match the original exactly |
| Clean up compressed images and old phone shots | Read fully faded text; it may invent wrong letters |
| Keep the colours and the shape | Fix tears and big scratches on its own, without an edit |
Because the tool redraws detail, faces can change slightly, such as the shape of an eye or a smile, most visibly in very small or very blurry photos. Always keep the original and compare faces carefully before sharing the new version as “the real photo”, especially pictures of people who have passed away.
05Enhancing by photo type: from black and white to early phones
Old photos don't all share the same problem. A black and white print from the sixties, a faded colour print from the nineties and a shot from an early camera phone each need a different first step:
| Photo type | Usual problem | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Black and white print | Scratches, specks, yellowing | An edit to remove scratches, then Enhance |
| Faded colour print, 80s or 90s | A red or yellow colour cast | An edit to correct colour, then Enhance |
| Early camera phone | Tiny resolution, noise | Enhance straight to 2K |
| Received over WhatsApp | Compression blocks | Ask the sender for the original, then Enhance |
| Frame from an old home video | Motion blur | Enhance, and accept that sharpness has limits |
A real-world example: a nineties wedding group photo, colour shifted towards red, with small faces. Step one in Edit: “correct the red colour cast to natural colours without changing the people”. Step two: Enhance at 2K. Then zoom into the faces and compare each one with the original, because small faces in group shots are the most likely to change.
06Repair and colourise old photos with one sentence
Enhance sharpens; it doesn't colourise or remove large scratches. That's what the Edit tab is for: upload the photo, original or enhanced, and describe the fix in a sentence. Editing starts on Creator. Prompts to copy:
1. Remove the scratches and white specks; keep the faces and clothes exactly as they are.
2. Repair the torn top-left corner using the surrounding background.
3. Colourise the photo with natural, muted colours without changing anyone's features.
4. Remove the yellow fading and restore balanced black and white.
5. Remove the glare in the middle of the photo; leave everything else. The order that usually works: repair with an edit first, enhance last. If you colourise, remember the colours are the tool's guess, so a dress or a car may not match reality. Say so when you share it.
Only edit photos of people who agree, and ask the people in the photo, or their family, before posting publicly. The studio refuses sexual edits and anything that undresses a real person.
07Product photos and compressed images: same tool
Enhance isn't only for old photos. Store owners use it on product shots taken with an old phone, supplier images that arrived compressed over WhatsApp, or a night photo of the shop sign:
- Blurry product shot: enhance to 2K before listing it, then remove the background if you want it on white.
- Compressed supplier photos: upload the largest copy you have, enhance, and check the logo and label text.
- A frame grabbed from video: enhancing sharpens it enough for a thumbnail or post.
- An old profile photo: a picture from a previous phone becomes clean enough for a work account.
Small label text is the first thing to change during enhancement. If the label matters, compare it letter by letter with the original, and if it drifted, use the original or reshoot.
08From an old photo to a memories video
Once the album is sharp, any photo can go to Vocla Video or into Video edit. It makes a lovely family piece: a grandparent's enhanced portrait with a short voiceover in your own dialect and Arabic captions on screen. Plans without video show an upgrade option.
هذي صورة جدي في الرياض، قبل أكثر من أربعين سنة.
كان يقول: البيت اللي يجمعنا هو أغلى شي عندنا.
واليوم، نجتمع على ذكراه.This is my grandfather in Riyadh, more than forty years ago. He used to say: the home that brings us together is the most precious thing we have. Today, we gather in his memory.
The image studio, including Enhance at 2K, starts on Starter at $4.99 a month. 4K and the Ultra quality start on Professional at $29. Prices display in local currency and are charged in USD.
Names and text in the examples are fictional. Plan limits and credit rates are current settings and can change; the exact price shows before anything runs.
Key takeaways
- Enhance redraws the same photo at 2K for 400 credits or 4K for 700, no prompt needed.
- It redraws detail, so faces can shift slightly: keep the original and compare.
- Photograph prints in daylight without flash or glass, and upload the uncompressed file.
- Repair and colourise with the Edit tab (from Creator), then enhance last.
Frequently asked questions
How can I improve the quality of an old or blurry photo?
Upload it to the Enhance tool in Vocla's Images page and pick 2K or 4K. The tool redraws the same photo with sharper detail and keeps its shape, with no prompt to write.
Does AI photo enhancement change faces?
It can, slightly, because it redraws missing detail. The change shows most in very small or very blurry photos, so keep the original and compare faces before sharing.
How much does it cost to upscale a photo to 4K?
700 credits per image at 4K and 400 at 2K. Enhance is available from Starter, 4K from Professional and up, and failed images are refunded.
Can AI colourise a black and white photo?
The Enhance tool doesn't colourise, but the Edit tab can, with a prompt like “colourise with natural colours without changing the features”. Editing starts on Creator, and the colours are the tool's guess, not the true originals.
What's the best way to digitise a printed photo first?
A scanner at its highest resolution is best. Otherwise, shoot it with your phone from directly above in daylight, without flash, and out of its glass frame.
