Change a Photo Background With AI in One Sentence, No Photoshop Needed
Change a photo background with AI and no Photoshop: one sentence moves your subject to a new scene, or cut it out to a transparent PNG. Light tips inside.
In this article
To change a photo background with AI in Vocla's image studio, you have two routes. Upload the photo in Edit and write one sentence, such as «put her on a quiet beach at sunset and keep everything else», and the scene and light change together. Or use Remove background to get a transparent PNG and place the subject on any design yourself.
01Two ways to change a background without Photoshop
Swapping a background used to mean an hour in Photoshop: masking hair strand by strand, feathering edges, then trying to convince the eye that the person really was standing on that beach. Now it takes a minute from your phone. The real question is which method suits your photo.
Vocla's image studio lives on the Images page in the web app's sidebar, and it changes backgrounds in two very different ways. Edit redraws the scene around your subject, so light and shadow match the new place. Remove background gives you the subject alone on a transparent background, and you decide where it goes.
| Situation | Edit with a sentence | Remove background |
|---|---|---|
| You want the person or product to look photographed somewhere new | Best fit: light and shadow adapt to the scene | Needs manual compositing afterwards |
| You need a white or transparent background for a store | Possible, but full transparency isn't its job | Best fit: a transparent PNG with soft edges |
| You already have a design template elsewhere | Not needed | Best fit: drop the PNG onto your template |
| Plan | From Creator | From Starter, 300 credits per image |
02Route one: change the photo background with AI in Edit
This is the closest thing to a reshoot. You aren't cutting the subject out and pasting it; you're asking the model to paint the new place around it, so reflections on a face or a perfume bottle fit the scene. The steps:
- 1Open Images: from the sidebar, pick the Edit tab at the top of the composer.
- 2Add the photo: upload from your phone, or pick one you made earlier in the studio.
- 3Describe the new background: one sentence with the place, the time of day and what must stay the same.
- 4Choose the quality: Vox Image is the strongest at keeping faces and products intact across edits.
- 5Press Apply edit: compare before and after in the viewer, then download or edit again.
A sentence that works has three parts: the place, described clearly; the time and light; and what stays exactly as it is. Copy these and change the details:
Change the background to a quiet beach at sunset, and keep the person, clothes and face exactly as they are.
Put the product on a white marble table by a sunny window, and keep the label and logo unchanged.
Replace the background with a modern office in soft daylight, without changing the face or pose.
Make the background a light grey studio wall, and keep everything else. The studio understands descriptions in English and Arabic, so bilingual teams can write in whichever language is quicker. What matters more than language is precision: «a nice background» gives you a random result, while «a quiet café with warm light» gives you the picture in your head.
Only have a two-word idea? Type it and press Improve. It expands the idea into a detailed prompt in the same language, for free, and you can tweak it before applying.
03Route two: remove the background to a transparent PNG
Sometimes you don't want a new scene; you want the subject on its own. A store owner needs product shots on one consistent background, a designer has a template ready, or someone is making a sticker. That's when you pick the Remove background tab.
- 1Upload the image: a product, a person, a logo or any photo from your phone.
- 2Press Remove background: no selecting or masking; the studio finds the main subject itself.
- 3Download the PNG: the subject alone on a transparent background, in your photo's original shape, never cropped.
It keeps the subject's colours and any printed text, along with the fine edges that give away basic cut-out tools: hair, the fringe of a shemagh, clear glass. On current settings it costs 300 credits per image, it's included from Starter, and a removal that fails costs nothing.
Once you have the PNG, either place it on your template in any design app, or go back to Edit and describe a new background. The second option helps when the original shot is very cluttered: clean it first, then build the scene.

Generic backgrounds such as «beach» or «office» work, but the picture that lands with a regional audience shows a place they recognise. These prompts cover the scenes people in the region ask for most, and every one of them protects the original subject:
Change the background to golden sand dunes at sunset under a clear orange sky, and keep the person as they are.
Put the person on a rooftop overlooking the Riyadh skyline at dusk with the city lights coming on, without changing their face.
Make the background a traditional Arabic majlis with red floor cushions and a dallah coffee pot, and keep the clothes and pose.
Place the perfume bottle on fine sand next to a brass lantern in warm light, and keep the label exactly as it is.Change the background to a balcony overlooking the Nile in late-afternoon light, and keep the person and clothes unchanged.
Make the background an old stone alley with carved wooden mashrabiya windows, in calm daylight.
Put the product on a wooden table in a warm home kitchen, with light steam rising from a coffee cup beside it.Want words in the new background, such as your shop name on a sign? Put them «in quotation marks», for example: a wooden sign that reads «قهوة الحي». The studio draws quoted text letter for letter, with correctly joined Arabic.
05Match the light so the new background doesn't look pasted on
What gives an edited photo away is rarely the background itself; it's the light. A face lit cool white from the left, over an orange sunset glowing from the right, reads as fake even to people who can't say why. These habits keep results natural:
- Pick a scene with similar light: an indoor shot under warm bulbs sits better in a café or majlis than on a midday beach.
- Name the time of day: «at sunset» or «soft daylight» helps the model recolour the light on your subject.
- Ask for the shadow: for products, add «with a soft shadow under it on the table», or the item looks like it's floating.
- Respect the camera angle: a top-down shot won't suit a city skyline; give it a tabletop or floor instead.
- Don't stack requests: a new background, new light and new outfit in one sentence raises the chance that something you didn't ask for changes.
- Edit in stages: change the background first, then adjust the light in a second edit on top of the result.
If you take the cut-out route and composite in another app, the same rules apply to you: choose a background lit from the same side, add a soft shadow under the subject, and don't scale the PNG beyond its native resolution. If the original is soft, run Enhance first to take it to 2K.
06Editing your own portrait: faces and consent
The most common people request is a profile or LinkedIn photo with a tidy background instead of a bedroom wall. Edit in Vocla keeps your features and expression and changes only what you asked for; for an even closer result, say «keep the face exactly as it is».
Change the background to a softly blurred modern office behind the person, like a professional headshot, and keep the face, hair and clothes unchanged.
Make the background a solid navy colour with soft studio lighting, without changing any facial features. The studio refuses sexual content and any edit that undresses or sexualises a real person. Only edit photos of people who have agreed to it, even in a group shot of family or colleagues.

Frequently asked questions
How do I change a photo background without Photoshop?
Upload the photo to the Edit tab in Vocla's image studio and write one sentence, such as «change the background to a beach at sunset and keep the person as they are», then press Apply edit. Or use Remove background for a transparent PNG you can place anywhere.
Will AI change my face when it changes the background?
Vocla's Edit keeps your features and expression and changes only what you asked for. Say «keep the face exactly as it is» for a closer result, and pick Vox Image, which is the strongest at preserving faces across edits.
Can I change a photo background with AI for free?
Not in Vocla: the Free plan doesn't include the image studio. Background removal starts on Starter at $4.99 a month and one-sentence edits on Creator. Images that fail aren't charged.
What's the difference between removing and changing a background?
Removing gives you the subject alone on a transparent background to place yourself. Changing it with a sentence paints a whole new scene around the subject, with light and shadow that suit it.
Can I add Arabic text to the new background?
Yes. Put the text in quotation marks inside your prompt, such as a sign reading «قهوة الحي», and the studio draws it letter for letter with joined Arabic. For longer text, choose Vox Image Pro.
