What you get

Samples from an interview transcript

An excerpt from a research interview in dialect, a quote log built from the text, and a names list prepared before upload. Names and content are invented.

  • Sample 1

    Excerpt from a field interview

    Lebanese Arabic

[00:07:14] الباحثة: شو أكتر شي تغيّر بشغلك بعد ما فتحتي المحل؟ [00:07:19] المشاركة: كتير إشيا. بالأول كنت بشتغل من البيت، هلق عندي موظفتين وبدّي فكّر بالإيجار كل شهر. [00:07:31] الباحثة: وكيف عم تدبّري حالك؟

Researcher: "What changed most in your work after you opened the shop?" Participant: "A lot of things. At first I worked from home; now I have two employees and I have to think about the rent every month." Researcher: "And how are you managing?" The speech stays in the speaker's dialect, with the start time of each line.

  • Sample 2

Quote log to verify before publishing

    Modern Standard Arabic

الاقتباس الأول، الدقيقة 07:19، المشاركة: الانتقال من العمل المنزلي إلى محل له إيجار وموظفتان. الاقتباس الثاني، الدقيقة 15:42، المشاركة: رأيها في القروض الصغيرة. الحالة: تمت مطابقتهما مع الصوت.

Quote one, minute 07:19, participant: moving from home-based work to a shop with rent and two employees. Quote two, minute 15:42, participant: her view on small loans. Status: both checked against the audio. A simple template: quote number, time, speaker, subject and whether you verified it.

  • Sample 3

Names list for a press interview

    Modern Standard Arabic

    الدكتورة هالة، المهندس طارق، حي الروضة، مشروع إعادة التأهيل، المجلس البلدي، محطة المعالجة، الصرف الصحي، دراسة الجدوى

Dr Hala, engineer Tarek, Al-Rawda district, the rehabilitation project, the municipal council, the treatment plant, sewerage, the feasibility study. Write titles and names in your organisation's house spelling.

The problem

Forty minutes of talk and three quotes to find

A journalist comes back from an interview with the deadline hours away.

  1. They know the guest said something strong on the subject but cannot recall the exact wording, and one wrong word inside quotation marks can cost a published correction.

  2. A researcher has a harder problem of volume: twenty field interviews in the participants' dialects, and a qualitative method that requires full transcripts before coding and analysis. Typing them by hand eats weeks of the study, and bringing in outside transcribers raises the confidentiality question the participants were promised.

  3. In hiring, many interviews happen in a single week, and evaluations are then written from general impressions because nobody noted what each candidate actually said.

Why Vocla

What interview transcription needs, and what Vocla provides

  • Questions and answers kept apart

The interviewer's voice is told apart from the guest's automatically, so the transcript reads as a dialogue and not one block. Name the two speakers once, and move any line that was misattributed where speech overlapped.

  • A quote you can verify in a click

Every line is tied to its moment in the recording, and the spoken word is highlighted as it plays. Before you put a sentence in quotation marks, click it and hear it in the speaker's own voice.

  • Dialect interviews written as spoken

Choose the guest's dialect on upload and their words are written in that dialect, not converted into Modern Standard Arabic, which is what a qualitative researcher or a journalist quoting verbatim needs.

  • A list for names and places

The guest's name, organisations, villages and professional terms that come up in the interview go into a list before transcribing. They are the first thing an editor asks about in review.

  • One export for editing, another for analysis

A Word file for editorial work and the interview archive, a CSV with start, end, speaker and text columns that opens in Excel with correct Arabic, and a JSON file for those who analyse with their own tools.

How it works

From an interview recording to a documented text

  1. Step 1

Record with consent and keep the original file

Tell the guest or participant that the interview is recorded and will be transcribed. Keep the original recording uncut: it is your reference in any dispute about what was said.

  2. Step 2

Upload the file and set dialect and names

Phone recordings, digital recorder files and video files up to 500 MB are accepted. Choose Arabic and the guest's dialect, and enter the names that will recur.

  3. Step 3

Name the interviewer and the guest

Replace Speaker 1 and Speaker 2 with the two names, or with codes such as "Researcher" and "Participant 07" if the study requires anonymity.

  4. Step 4

    Match quotes against the audio

Search for the word you remember, open that point and listen to the whole sentence with what comes before and after. Correct any word that was written wrongly before copying the quote, and note its timestamp next to it.

  5. Step 5

Export the version your work needs

Word for the editor or the hiring panel, CSV for qualitative analysis software or a coding sheet. Translation into English is optional, for those publishing their research in another language.

Cost

What interview transcription costs

You are charged 150 credits per started minute of the recording, and the cost is shown before you start. Someone transcribing one interview a week and someone transcribing thirty for a study work it out the same way: total minutes. Translation is optional and adds 60 credits per minute.

Transcription is part of the paid plans, not the Free plan. Starter accepts files up to 30 minutes with 5,000 credits a month, and Professional raises the limit to 120 minutes with 80,000 credits a month, a better fit for research projects with long interviews.

The numbers

Quick maths

Worked example: a 30-minute recording is 4,500 credits, or 6,300 with translation.

  • Not available on the Free plan; included in every paid plan.
  • Transcription costs 150 credits per started minute of audio, shown before you start and refunded if the transcript fails.
  • Translating the transcript adds 60 credits per minute.
  • Longest file: 30 minutes on Starter, 120 on Professional and 300 on Business.

Figures use the current plans and default credit rates. The exact cost is always shown in the app before you confirm.

Questions people ask

What is the best way to transcribe an Arabic interview?

Record with a microphone close to the guest, then upload the file to Vocla, choose their dialect and add the names of people and places. You get a text split between the two speakers with timestamps; what remains is checking names and figures and matching quotes against the audio before you use them.

Is the transcript accurate enough for press quotes?

The transcript is a good starting point, not a substitute for checking. On clear recordings most words are right, but any quote published under someone's name should be one you have listened to yourself. That is why every line is tied to its time: click, listen, and correct the word if needed.

Do my interviews stay confidential?

Transcripts are kept in your workspace and are reachable by the people you gave a role in it. The protections in place, and what is not done yet, are set out plainly on the security and trust page; read it against your organisation's or ethics board's requirements before uploading sensitive interviews. We do not list certifications Vocla does not hold.

Can it transcribe an interview in Iraqi or Moroccan dialect?

Yes, you choose the dialect on upload and the speech is written in it. Accuracy on dialects is lower than on Modern Standard Arabic and drops further with noise or phone audio, so plan a longer review for field interviews recorded in open places.

How do I use the transcript for qualitative analysis?

Export the interview as CSV, with one row per segment including speaker and time, then open it in Excel or import it into the analysis software you use and add a column for codes. Or export Word if your team codes directly on the text. The coding and the analysis are your work.

Does it tell the interviewer's voice from the guest's?

Yes, the two speakers are detected automatically and each line is attributed to one of them. It works best when they take turns; interruptions and overlapping speech can end up on a single speaker, which you fix by splitting the line and moving it in the editor.
