Quick answer

To add an Arabic AI voiceover to YouTube Shorts, write a script that opens with a hook you can say in about 2 seconds, size it (around 60 words per 30 seconds in dialect), generate it on Vocla with a voice in your audience's dialect, then lay it over vertical footage with Arabic captions, or let the Video studio build the scenes. YouTube accepts Shorts up to 3 minutes.

01Why a Shorts voiceover is its own craft

A Short is not a long YouTube video with the ends cut off. Viewers are swiping with their thumb, and the stay-or-swipe decision happens in roughly the first two seconds. So a Shorts voiceover has one job before anything else: grab attention with the first words, deliver one idea clearly, and finish before interest fades.

Length is more flexible than it used to be. According to YouTube Help, you can upload Shorts up to 3 minutes long, and the format is vertical. That doesn't mean every idea needs three minutes. Most Arabic educational and entertainment Shorts that work sit between 20 and 60 seconds; longer ones need a story that earns the extra time.

Shorts length of up to 3 minutes per YouTube Help, Get started creating YouTube Shorts (support.google.com/youtube/answer/10059070), as of October 2026.

This guide sticks to Shorts: hooks, word counts per length, captions, export and YouTube's policies. If you're choosing a text-to-speech tool for long-form YouTube, we have a separate buying guide, and the creator playbook covers every other format:

02The hook: two seconds decide everything

The best Shorts opener is one short line that opens a question or promises a result. No greetings to your followers, no channel intro; save those for long-form. If your first sentence takes more than about two seconds to say, cut it down.

The formal line (in this video we'll learn three ways to save money at the end of the month) explains instead of hooking. The Saudi line (your salary runs out before mid-month? here are three moves that save you) starts with the viewer's own problem, in their own dialect. Three ready-to-copy hooks:

Tip

Generate the hook with three different voices and play them back to back. The one that makes you want to keep listening is the right one, and it is usually the clearest rather than the most dramatic.

03How many words does a Short need?

The classic mistake is writing a long script, then speeding the voice up to squeeze it in. It comes out rushed and tiring. Size the script first instead. Vocla's script planner assumes about 2.2 words per second for Gulf and Jordanian Arabic, 2.3 for Egyptian and Lebanese, 2.0 for Modern Standard Arabic and 2.6 for English, plus a short breath between sentences:

Short lengthArabic dialectModern Standard ArabicEnglish
15 sabout 30 wordsabout 28 wordsabout 36 words
30 sabout 60 wordsabout 55 wordsabout 72 words
60 sabout 120 wordsabout 110 wordsabout 145 words
3 minabout 360 wordsabout 330 wordsabout 430 words

These are natural-pace estimates; a calm read is about 15% slower and a lively one about 15% faster. Paste your own script below to see its real length, how it splits into scenes and whether your hook fits in two seconds:

English product names and numbers take longer than they look. A phone model name with a number in it reads as three words on the page but takes as long as a short sentence.

04Step by step: adding an AI voiceover to YouTube Shorts

There are two routes, depending on whether you already have footage. Route one, you have footage and only need the voice:

  1. 1Write and size the script: A 2-second hook, one idea, and an ending that invites a follow or a rewatch.
  2. 2Open Text to speech: Choose the dialect in the dialect picker, then a voice from the Voice library that suits your channel's tone.
  3. 3Tune pronunciation and pace: Add tashkeel to ambiguous words, save your channel name in the Pronunciation dictionary, and use the speed slider rather than cutting key words.
  4. 4Download: MP3 on every plan, or WAV on paid plans if your editor prefers it.
  5. 5Edit and export vertically: Place the voice on your footage at 9:16, add captions, then upload from the YouTube app or YouTube Studio.
Tip

Leave half a second of silence at the end of the audio. Shorts loop automatically, and a line that stops dead feels like an editing mistake, while a soft ending makes the rewatch feel natural.

Route two, you want the whole video from the script: open Vocla's Video studio, paste the script and pick the voice, dialect and 9:16 format. The studio splits the script into scenes of 3 to 8 seconds, shows a storyboard you can approve or edit scene by scene, then renders an MP4 with the voice and Arabic captions burned in, plus an optional music bed.

PlanVideo seconds per monthLongest clipOutput
Starter ($4.99)30 s15 s720p vertical 9:16, watermarked
Professional ($29)300 s60 s1080p in every format, no watermark

In practice, if you post longer Shorts or several a week, route one with your own or licensed footage is the economical choice, and the Video studio suits short clips and experiments. Building a channel with no face at all? We wrote a dedicated guide:

05Arabic captions people can actually read

Many viewers scroll with the sound off, so on-screen captions finish the job your voiceover starts. The catch is that Arabic often renders reversed or with broken letters in general-purpose editors. Vocla's AI captions set Arabic right to left in a properly sized font, offer five styles including karaoke (each word lights up as it is spoken), reframe video to 9:16 and export MP4, SRT or VTT.

  • Two lines at most: A vertical screen is narrow, and three lines bury the picture.
  • Caption what is said: If the voice says وش, don't caption the formal ماذا. Matching words are easier on the eye.
  • Lift captions off the bottom: YouTube's buttons and channel name cover the lower part of a Short, so keep captions centred or slightly above.

06YouTube's rules: AI disclosure and monetisation

Before you build a whole Shorts channel on a synthetic voice, know two rules straight from YouTube:

  • Altered or synthetic content: YouTube asks creators to disclose content that is realistic and meaningfully altered or generated, such as making a real person appear to say something they didn't. Its help page says cloning your own voice to create voiceovers or dubs does not need disclosure.
  • Inauthentic content: The monetisation policies exclude mass-produced or repetitive content, including AI content built from generic templates without the creator's own insight, while allowing AI tools that help deliver an original narrative.

The practical upshot: a clear dialect voice reading an idea you researched, over footage you chose, doesn't conflict with these rules by itself. A hundred Shorts with the same template and the same sentences, one word swapped each time, is exactly what the policy targets. And remember that Vocla's Free plan is for personal use; a monetised channel needs Starter or above.

From YouTube Help: Disclosing altered or synthetic content (support.google.com/youtube/answer/14328491) and YouTube channel monetisation policies (support.google.com/youtube/answer/1311392), as of October 2026. Policies change, so check them before you publish.

07Common Shorts voiceover mistakes

  • A long greeting up front: Every second before the idea costs viewers. Open with the problem or the payoff.
  • Mixing dialects: وش, ايه and شو in one Short confuses the ear. Pick one dialect and write the whole script in it.
  • A voice that's too fast: Instead of speeding up to hit 30 seconds, cut a whole point.
  • Music on top of speech: Keep the music low under the voice, or use the Video studio's music bed, which ducks under speech automatically.
  • No ending ask: A last line like follow for part two or try it and tell me gives viewers a reason to engage.

Key takeaways

  • YouTube accepts Shorts up to 3 minutes as of October 2026, but most ideas only need 20 to 60 seconds.
  • Say the hook in about two seconds and start with the viewer's problem or the payoff, never a greeting.
  • Plan around 60 words per 30 seconds in dialect and 55 in MSA instead of speeding the voice up.
  • Cloning your own voice for voiceovers needs no disclosure on YouTube, but monetisation needs original content and a paid Vocla plan.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a YouTube Short be?

According to YouTube Help as of October 2026, a Short can be up to 3 minutes long in a vertical format. The limit isn't a target, though: use the shortest length that delivers your whole idea.

Do I have to disclose an AI voiceover on a Short?

YouTube asks for disclosure when content is realistic and meaningfully altered or generated, such as making a real person appear to say something they didn't. Its policy page states that cloning your own voice for a voiceover does not require disclosure.

How many words fit in a 30-second Short?

About 60 words in Arabic dialects such as Saudi, Egyptian or Levantine, about 55 in Modern Standard Arabic and about 72 in English, at a natural pace. Paste your script into the script planner to check the real length.

Can I make a Short entirely from a script, with no footage?

Yes. Vocla's Video studio turns a script into voice, AI scenes and an MP4 with Arabic captions. Starter includes 30 seconds a month with clips up to 15 seconds; Professional includes 300 seconds with clips up to 60 seconds at 1080p.

Which dialect should I use for pan-Arab Shorts?

Clear Modern Standard Arabic works for educational Shorts. For entertainment and everyday content, use the dialect of your biggest audience segment, because Shorts live on instant familiarity.
