Looking for a way to change your voice because you want to publish without using your real one? Or because you need a character voice for a story or a game, or because an important recording came out in a voice you don't like? AI voice changing today is very different from the old "robot voice" effects that only shifted pitch up or down. This guide explains how the voice changer in Vocla works, when to use it, how to get the best result, and which lines not to cross.

Voice changing versus traditional effects

Traditional effects process the sound wave itself: raise the pitch and the voice sounds lighter, lower it and it sounds deeper. The result usually sounds artificial, because the original voice is still underneath.

Vocla's voice changer works differently. It takes your speech, with its words and pacing, and re-voices it with another voice from the library. You keep your performance: where you paused, where you sped up, how you phrased each sentence, while the voice people hear changes. Vocla aligns the new voice to the segments of your original take, so it stays in sync if you're working on a video.

It's also worth knowing what the tool doesn't do. It doesn't copy your voice or anyone else's; it uses synthetic voices from your library. If your goal is to have your own voice say new scripts, that is a different feature, voice cloning, with its own requirements.

How to change your voice, step by step

1. Record or upload

Record straight from the browser with your microphone, or upload an existing file. The tool accepts common formats such as MP3, WAV and M4A, up to an hour of audio per file, and uploads are resumable, so large files survive a patchy connection. Files are checked before processing starts.

2. Pick the target voice

Choose any voice in your library that suits the scene: Saudi, Emirati, Egyptian, Levantine or Modern Standard Arabic, male or female, calm or energetic. You can also use a voice you created yourself with voice design from a written description.

A question that comes up often: can I change my voice to a woman's voice, or to a man's? Yes. The target voice decides the result, so if you record in your own voice and pick a female voice from the library, you will hear your words in that voice, and the other way round. Because the performance comes from you, your way of speaking will carry through, so deliver the lines in a style that suits the character you picked.

If you use the same voice and settings for every episode, save them as a preset and apply it to each new take.

3. Convert, listen and download

Before you confirm, you see the credit price of the conversion, so there are no surprises. Afterwards, listen to the result, compare versions in your history (grouped by day), and download the one you like.

The voice changer is a paid feature: it is included in every paid plan, from Starter at $4.99/month to Professional and Enterprise, and is not available on the Free plan. See pricing for what each plan includes.

When a voice changer helps

Creators who'd rather not use their own voice

Some people want to share what they know in tutorials, stories or updates without their real voice being recognised, for privacy or because of their job. A voice changer lets you speak naturally and publish in a different, consistent voice.

Character voices

If you publish a series with a recurring character, or you're working on an audio story or a game prototype, you can record each episode yourself and publish it in the same character voice every time. For several characters in one scene, record each character's lines in a separate file and convert each file with a different voice.

Rescuing a weak recording

Sometimes the performance is great but the voice doesn't fit the project: an old voice-over by a narrator who is no longer available, or a take you simply don't like. You can keep the timing of the existing voice-over and swap in a different voice. Note that changing the voice doesn't remove noise, so clean the recording first, as described below.

Dubbing and refreshing content

When you have an Arabic recording already synced to a video and want a different voice with the same timing, the voice changer keeps the sync. If you want to take a video into another language or dialect, the dubbing tool is the better fit.

Tips for a cleaner result

The output depends heavily on the recording you start with:

  • One speaker per file: if the recording is a conversation, split each speaker into a separate file.
  • No background music: music confuses the conversion. Add it after converting, in your editor.
  • Clean it first: if there is air-conditioning hum, street noise or echo, run the file through the voice cleaner before converting.
  • Speak clearly at a natural pace: the tool keeps your rhythm, so stumbles or rushing will show in the result.
  • Pick a voice that matches your delivery: a calm read in a very energetic voice may not sound consistent.
  • Test a short clip first: convert a minute and compare two voices before converting a long recording.

A voice changer is a powerful creative tool, which is why it comes with clear limits:

  • Convert your own voice, or a recording you have permission to use. Don't upload other people's recordings without their consent.
  • Don't impersonate anyone. Don't use it to make listeners believe a real person said something they didn't, or to deceive or defraud anyone.
  • Be open with your audience when it matters, especially in news or advertising content.

Vocla's voice consent policy sets out what is allowed, and we discuss these questions in more depth in Consent first: the ethics of using AI voices.

Voice changer, voice cloning or text to speech?

Three related tools, each with its own job:

You want to… The right tool
Keep your performance and timing in a different voice Voice changer
Produce new scripts in your own voice Voice cloning
Produce speech from written text without recording Text to speech

If you don't like recording at all, text to speech is faster. If your performance is what makes your content work, such as comic timing or emotion in a story, the voice changer keeps it.

Start with a short test

Record two sentences in your own voice, convert them with two different library voices, and listen to the difference. It's the quickest way to find the voice that suits your content before you convert a full episode.
